A BREATH OF FRESH HAIR
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BARBERIA
Barberia began in 2011, when its founders first met and discovered a shared fascination with barber culture and the enduring rituals surrounding it. That encounter soon developed into an idea: to rediscover the art of barbering and give it a new and more considered expression. At the time, finding a place that genuinely understood the straightforward grooming needs of gentlemen was not always so straightforward. The industry was largely shaped by conventional hair salons, with their services and products often developed around a different set of needs. Meanwhile, many traditional barbershops had seen little evolution in their standards, surroundings or approach to service. The very idea of the barbershop had gradually become associated with somewhere purely functional, rather than a place of craftsmanship, care and character.
Something else had also begun to disappear.
Historically, the barbershop had been more than a place for a trim or shave. It was a rare social space where grooming, conversation and camaraderie naturally came together. A place where one could exchange stories, speak freely, sit quietly, or simply enjoy the familiar company of others. Barberia wanted to bring that spirit back, not by recreating the past exactly as it was, but by restoring its finest qualities for the present. The vision was for a place that combined accomplished hands, impeccable hygiene, thoughtful hospitality, and a genuine understanding of its guests. A place where precision cuts and traditional shaves could be enjoyed with comfort and a sense of occasion. Conversation when desired, quiet when preferred, and camaraderie without ceremony.
In 2013, BARBERIA’s first barbershop-cum-sensorium outlet opened at Grand Indonesia. It introduced a more immersive approach to barbering, one in which craftsmanship was accompanied by atmosphere, scent, sound and considered service. Every element was intended to make the grooming ritual feel less like an appointment and more like time well spent. From Grand Indonesia, Barberia gradually expanded its presence to Senayan City, Plaza Indonesia and PIK Avenue, followed by Pantai Berawa in Bali and K Mall Menara Jakarta. Each address brought its own character, while remaining grounded in the same principles of accomplished craftsmanship, personal attention and genuine hospitality.
A defining new chapter began in May 2022 with the opening of Barberia Grooming Parlours at The Langham, Jakarta. The partnership allowed Barberia to introduce what it had long envisioned as a dedicated luxury grooming-parlour experience within one of Indonesia’s leading international hotels. It represented a meeting of two complementary traditions: the familiarity and craftsmanship of the barbershop, and the precision, discretion and intuitive service expected of world-class hospitality. It was also a proud milestone for Barberia, helping establish a new standard for luxury grooming in Indonesia.

The Langham partnership was followed by the opening of Barberia Grooming Parlours at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud in December 2023. Set amid the resort’s rainforest, rice fields and the flowing Ayung River, the parlour offered a quieter and more restorative interpretation of the Barberia experience.
Here, the grooming ritual became part of a much broader sense of wellbeing. Barbering craftsmanship was brought together with Mandapa’s highly personalised approach to hospitality, creating an experience shaped by privacy, stillness and the natural rhythm of its surroundings. In September 2024, Barberia opened another luxury grooming establishment at Suvarna Jakarta Golf Club. Created with the particular routines of golfers in mind, it offered a place to prepare before a round, restore afterwards or simply take a considered pause within the day.

Being entrusted to operate within properties of such distinction remains a particular source of pride. The Langham, Jakarta has received Two MICHELIN Keys, placing it among only six hotels in Indonesia to receive that distinction, while Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve has received Three MICHELIN Keys, the Guide’s highest hotel recognition and one awarded to only three properties in the country.
These distinctions belong, of course, to the hotels themselves. Yet they also speak to the calibre of hospitality environments in which Barberia was invited to participate. To become part of their guest experience required Barberia to contribute with the same discipline, consistency, discretion and attention to detail expected throughout each property.
After more than two years in Ubud, the dedicated Barberia Grooming Parlour at Mandapa concluded its residency in February 2026. The highly private nature of the resort meant that demand for a permanent grooming parlour was more selective than originally anticipated, and the decision was made to bring this particular operating chapter to a considered close. Its conclusion, however, does not diminish what the experience represented. Mandapa allowed Barberia to explore grooming in an entirely different context, one shaped by nature, wellbeing and exceptionally personal hospitality. It remains an important chapter in the Barberia story and a valuable expression of how far the traditional barbershop experience can travel. The relationship also continues beyond the barber’s chair. A selection of products from 1925 Grooming Co., Barberia’s own grooming and lifestyle house, remains available at Mandapa, allowing guests to discover and take home part of the grooming ritual.
Today, Barberia is represented by 30 barbers and supported by 30 members of staff. Together, they continue to uphold the principles upon which the brand was founded: accomplished craftsmanship, genuine hospitality and an understanding that good grooming is never merely about appearance. More than a decade after its first cut, Barberia continues to move forward without forgetting what made the barbershop matter in the first place. A well-kept space. A skilled pair of hands. A moment to pause. And the camaraderie that turns an ordinary appointment into something more human. Barberia has never believed in expanding simply for the sake of placing its name on another door. Growth has always followed alignment: the right setting, shared standards and a genuine reason to be there. The next chapter will arrive in much the same way—considered, unhurried and unmistakably Barberia. And when the right door opens, we look forward to welcoming you through it.
